Ephemerality
Everything on earth is either evolving from or devolving towards nothingness. Nothing lasts. There is just continuous flow.
My heart is broken by the devastation wrought on the people and land of New Zealand by Cyclone Gabrielle. Especially my friends on the west coast of Auckland, cut off and struggling to repair their lives and land.
I used to live and make environmental art in the Waitakere Ranges and the west coast beaches for 20 years before moving to the mountains of the South Island. I love those wild places so much because they are the fragile edges of civilisation where communities try to protect the biodiversity and wilderness around them. Now it is the communities that need protection.
In the spirit of solidarity and empathy with those suffering here are some ephemeral works I made at Karekare, Whites, Anawhata, Piha, and Whatipu beaches.
Stay strong and care for each other.
