How we saw the light in 2004

Back in 2004 when we were designing our new house in Wanaka we tried to be as sustainable as possible. One of the last touches was the light fittings. Rather than costly imported glass we made these lightshades over our kitchen bench from recycled PET milk bottles and they have been serving their purpose ever since.

The first piece of furniture for our house was this sofa for which we sourced upholstery fabric designed by McDonough Braungart who had just published Cradle to Cradle Design - the radical start of circular economy. Made from recycled polypropylene the fabric has stood up well for 18 years.

Congratulations to New Zealand’s Sustainable Business Network (SBN) for launching their successful circular design catalogue which features our circular land art.

Circular design has a giant future if only we see the light. If the circular economy were to transform industrial design and consumer culture humanity just might stand a chance of having a liveable planet in the future.

Circular design has been at the heart of our art practice since 1994 when we made Stone Circle which has become an iconic image around the world.
