Taking the fragility of Earth’s ecological dynamic balance as a theme, we developed this project inspired by a film crew’s invitation to document our working practice in 2011. It resulted in a body of work examining the delicate relationship between human systems and the fragile natural world that supports them.
This series of works made throughout the seasons of a year expresses not just our love for this place where we live, but a love and concern for the fragile canvas of the biosphere that nourishes us all.
Over a year we made these works in the mountains and valleys around Wanaka and on the South Island’s West Coast, while the film makers James Blake and Joey Bania documented the process.
The 25-minute film Delicate Canvas was premiered at the Regent Theatre during the Science Teller festival in Dunedin and in Auckland at the Documentary Edge Festival. The work was exhibited at Otago Museum and also as a solo exhibition titled Fragile Canvas at Gallery 33 in Wanaka in 2012.
